Dick Ludwell had just witnessed a murder. He’d run across an up-and-coming young middleweight, Billy Gonzales, in the Crescent Club, and Billy, obviously frightened, had asked to talk to him privately. Five minutes later, he’d gone out into an alley to meet the fighter, heard three shots and seen a man putting a gun back into a shoulder clip.

Now Dick’s problem was to pile up a few points before he himself was knocked out forever. In order to protect himself, he had to get away somewhere, and he selected an abandoned farm whose owner had just died and been buried in the meadow. To his surprise, another corpse was occupying the farmhouse, so Dick buried the stranger, too, and temporarily took on his identity, as revealed by his personal papers.
